Todays Golfer Win Signifies Shift in Tastes

Mizuno’s JPX850 irons have won a landmark gold in Todays Golfer’s 2015 Super Game Improvement Iron Category.  The win follows a record haul of 6 golf medals for Mizuno irons in Golf Digests 2015 Hot List.

“We’ve always pushed back against the notion of huge iron heads with excessive offset.” Chris Voshall, Senior Engineer.

The award signifies a shift in preference to more streamlined forgiving irons – with a more technology packed into a compact, versatile head shape.  Mizuno’s JPX850 was one of the smaller clubheads on test – yet tested highly for both distance and dispersion.  The testers were swayed by the ‘thinner top edge’ and ‘pleasing sound on contact’ which set the JPX850 aside from its clunkier competitors.

“Balanced Performance is something Mizuno has held tightly to – long before it became a trend in the industry,” said Mizuno’s senior engineer Chris Voshall.  “We’ve always pushed back against the notion of huge iron heads with excessive offset – you lose too much in feel and the look at address.”

The JPX850 has a subtle flow in shape to its precise short irons.

“These are still irons for golfers who take the game seriously – they don’t want or need huge cavities or thick top lines from 8-PW.  The set needs to flow seamlessly from the mid irons without any huge jumps – so that sets the tone on the overall look and size.  The engineering job them becomes more complex, trying to max out feel, forgiveness, distance and feel within a reduced head size.”
